Awbury Arboretum Neighbors Association

About Us

Awbury Arboretum Neighbors Association (AANA) is a non-profit community organization in East Germantown.  Since it's establishment in 1974, AANA has held monthly meetings with speakers who can help us with quality of life issues and obtaining city services.  The founders had the foresight to know that community action would help us keep our neighborhood beautiful and a good place to live.  We received our 501 (c) (3) designation in 1983.

Our current serving Executive Board includes:

Herb Powers, President

Nicole Viaud, Vice President

Brenda Bellinger, Secretary

Steven Coleman, Treasurer

Evelyn Spann, Asst. Treasurer

Adrienne Glenn, Reporter

Linda Owens, Editor

Members: Carl Boyd, Torrence Harris, Brenna Kelly, Mamie Nesmith, Meg Ritcher and Dessadra Smith

Our services to the area have included aesthetic, social and safety issues:

  • For ten years, the Youth services Program ran a summer day camp and year-round job training program for teens.  In 2004, with the help of State Representative John Myers, we held a summer job training program for area youth.

  • Traffic calming reduced the volume of cars on Washington Lane from four lanes to two, plus bicycle lanes.  This makes the very narrow sidewalks safer for students from our neighborhood schools.

  • For almost 25 years, AANA joined the Awbury Arboretum to hold the Awbury Fair and Plant Sale in May, the Christmas Greens sale in December-- which benefited both organizations.

  • The SEPTA Railroad bridge over Washington Lane has a scenic mural and 'Welcome' sign designed and executed by Del Conner with a crew of volunteers.

  • Before the City recycling program was in effect, AANA started their own recycle program at the Immaculate Conception playground.

  • Our neighbors work with neighboring institutions to improve the parking, planting and crowd control near Awbury Park and the Awbury Rec Center.

With continued support from our community, we will keep making this a place all neighbors are proud to call home.  Are you an area resident and are interested in becoming a member of AANA?  Contact Us below or come to our next monthly meeting for additional information!
